Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide such an air-fuel ratio control device for the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine with stable and highly precise control function as being capable of giving simple treatment adaptable computer processing for eliminating the influence of a waste time existing in the exhaust system containing a catalyzer, when an air-fuel ratio for the exhaust system of the internal combustion engine containing the catalyzer is controlled.
SOLUTION: An object exhaust system E is modelled in a discrete system containing a response delay element and a waste time element and the discrete system model is used to estimate the output VO2/OUT of an O2 sensor from data for the output KACT of an air-fuel sensor 5 on the upstream side of a catalyzer 3 and for the output VO2/OUT of the O2 sensor on the downstream side of the catalyzer 3 after a waste time existing in the system E. A sliding mode control or the like is used to control an air-fuel ratio for exhaust gas entering into the catalyzer 3 in order to converge the estimated value of the output VO2/OUT of the O2 sensor to a specified target value VO2/TARGET.
