Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid catalyst capable of producing alkylene adducts having a narrow distribution of an addition mol while inhibiting the generation of a polyalkylene glycol having a molecular weight as high as scores of thousands as a by-product.
SOLUTION: As an alkoxylation catalyst, use is made of a metal oxide which contains magnesium, aluminum and, as a third component, at least one metal which is selected from Groups 6A, 7A and 8 of the Periodical Table. The third component reacts with aluminum to form a spinel type oxide or the like (e.g. MnAl2O4, when Mn is the third component.), which results in such a modification of the structure of the active center of the catalysts that allows the inhibition of the by-production of a high molecular weight poly alkylene glycol.
