PURPOSE: To prepare a mixture which can be used as a raw material of the succeeding coupling process in the manufacture of dyes without separation or purification, by reacting an aromatic amine with a specific amount of an aromatic sulfonic acid ester in the absence of a solvent.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic amine of formula I (A1 is lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, benzene ring which may be substituted by halogen, etc., etc.; R1 is H, alkenyl, lower alkyl which may be substituted by CN, etc.) is alkylated with an aromatic sulfonic acid ester of formula II [A2 is benzene ring which may be substituted by CH3; R2 is furfuryl, tetrahydrofurfuryl, lower alkyl which may be substituted by halogen, etc.), in the presence of an acid-acceptor and in the absence of a solvent, at 60W130°C. The amount of the sulfonic acid ester is ≤1.3 mole times the theoretical amount necessary to alkylate the amine.
