Title:
ALKYLATION OF PHENOLS
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5520709
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To prepare alkylated phenols in high yield, by the reaction of olefins and phenols using a catalyst comprising a Ti oxide and a W oxide.

CONSTITUTION: Alkylphenols are prepared by the reaction of olefins and phenols in the presence of a catalyst comprising a Ti oxide and a W oxide. Preferably, the catalyst has a weight ratio of a Ti oxide to a W oxide of 40/60W99/1 and comprises, in an example, titanium dioxide and tungsten trioxide. Since the catalyst is especially active to isoolefins, isoolefins can be reacted selectively from a mixture containing isoolefins. For example, isobutylene is exclusively reacted when spent fraction is used.

EFFECT: The ratio of an o-alkylated compound and a nucleus-alkylated compound can be controlled by controlling the catalyst composition and reaction conditions.
