Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new compound emitting excellent sandal-like scent, thus useful as e.g. a scent-imparting component for toiletries, etc.

CONSTITUTION: This new compound is expressed by formula I (R1-R3 each is H or an 1-3C alkyl) e.g. 3-[2-2',2',3'-trimethyl-3'-cyclopentenyl)ethoxy]-2- butanol. The compound of formula I is obtained by reaction between a compound of formula II and a compound of formula III in the presence of an acid to produce an acetal of formula IV, which is, in turn, subjected to hydrogenolysis.
