Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound having woody or soil-like soft fragrance giving sweet feeling and capable of imparting the fragrance of other perfumery with warm and natural atmosphere by mixing it.
CONSTITUTION: This is a compound of formula I (R1 is H or a 1-6C alkyl; R2 is a 1-6C alkyl), e.g. 2,2,7,7-tetramethylcycloheptyloxypropanone. The compound is obtained e.g. by reacting 2,2,7,7-tetramethylcycloheptanol with a strong base to obtain an alcoholate, reacting the alcoholate with an epoxide to obtain a l-(2,2,7,7-tetramethylcycloheptyloxy)-2-alkanol of formula II and subsequently oxidizing the product in the presence of e.g. a metal catalyst such as Cu-Cr at 50-400°C.
