NEW MATERIAL: A compd. expressed by formula I, (wherein R1 is H, halogen, cyano or CF3; R2, R4 and R5 are each H or halogen; R3 is halogen, cyano, CF3, OCF3; Z is halogen, OH, amino, alkylamino, alkenylamino, alkynylamino, arylamino, aralkylamino, alkoxycarbonylalkylamino, cyanamino, hydrazino, etc.).

EXAMPLE: (R)-α-[5-(2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)-naphthalen-1-yloxy]- propionic acid ethyl.

USE: The compd. is used as a herbicide, defoliant, dehydrator, withering agent of broadleaf plants, especially a heribicide of weeds.

PREPARATION: For example, 5-aryloxy-1-naphthol expressed by formula II is allowed to react with a propionic acid deriv. expressed by formula III (Y is a nucleophilic leaving group) in a solvent such as acetonitrile in the presence of an acid acceptor such as K2CO3 to obtain the compd. of formula I.
