PURPOSE: To provide the subject ceramic sintered body mainly composed of silicon carbide whisker-reinforced alumina excellent in oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance even at high temperatures and keeping strength and fracture toughness improved by compounding a silicon carbide whisker.
CONSTITUTION: The objective alumina-based composite ceramic sintered body (11) is obtained by uniting a substrate (12) composed of silicon carbide whisker- reinforced alumina and the uppermost surface layer (14) composed of alumina through an interface layer (13) containing a silicon carbon whisker and alumina into one body. The content of the silicon carbide whisker in the above-mentioned interface layer (13) gradually increases from the above-mentioned uppermost surface layer to the above-mentioned substrate so as to have the final value substantially equal to that in the above-mentioned substrate (12). The total thickness of the above-mentioned uppermost surface layer (14) and the above- mentioned interface layer (13) is ≤15% based on the thickness of the whole sintered material.
