PURPOSE: To obtain an amide derivative, represented by a specific formula, having excellent water holding and water cutoff abilities and further excellent improving effects on the water holding ability of a horny layer and useful as a dermal preparation for external use and a hair cosmetic, etc.
CONSTITUTION: A amide derivative of formula I [R1 and R2 are each a 1-40C (hydroxylated)hydrocarbon; R3 is a 1-6C alkylene or a single bond; R4 is H, a 1-12C alkoxy or 2,3-dihydroxypropyloxy, with the proviso that R4 is H when R3 is the single bond]. Furthermore, the derivative is preferably obtained by reacting, e.g. a glycidyl ether of formula II with an amine of formula III (R4f is H or a 1-12C alkoxy, with the proviso that R4f is H when R3 is the single bond) (at ambient temperature to 150°C), then reacting the resultant amino-alcohol derivative with methyl ester of a fatty acid, etc., in the presence of a basic catalyst (at ambient temperature to 150°C under atmospheric pressure to 0.01mmHg), further reacting the prepared amide derivative with an epoxide such as epichlorohydrin in the presence of potassium hydroxide, etc., (at ambient temperature to 150°C) and hydrating the resultant amide derivative of formula IV under basic conditions, etc., at ambient temperature to 300°C.
