PURPOSE: To obtain new amino- and ammonium-isocyanates useful as starting substances for cationic polymers contg. quat. ammonium group such as cationic polysaccharides that are raw materials of coagulants for paper, medical filters, cosmetic cleaners and clarifying effluents.
CONSTITUTION: Amino- and ammonium-isocyanates of formula I [wherein R is a 2-10C alkylene; Y is amino of formula II or formula III [in which R1 to R3 are an alkyl, R1 and R2 together with N form (CH2)4, (CH2)5 or (CH2CH2)O, and R3 is allyl, methallyl or benzyl]; and X- is an anion of strong acid], such as a compound of formula IV, are provided. One of the compd. of the formula I, i.e., an amino-isocyanate, is obtained by allowing urea of formula V (wherein R4 and R5 have the same meanings as R1 and R2) to react with an isocyanate. Other one, i.e., an ammonium isocyanate is obtained by alkylating the amino isocyanate with a compd. of R3X.
