To obtain polymer beads excellent in antibacterial action by incorporating at least one kind of antibacterial phosphonium cations into a cation- exchange resin having acidic groups.
The polymer beads, having an average bead size of 20-2,000 μm, are prepd. by incorporating 0.1-80 mol.% antibacterial phosphonium cations into a cation-exchange resin having acidic groups (e.g. sulfo or carboxyl groups). Examples of a phosphonium cation represented by the formula: R1R2R3R4P+ are a trimethyl-n-dodecylphosphonium cation, a trimethyl-n-octadecylphosphonium cation, and a triethylbenzylphosphonium cation, In the formula, Rl to R4 are each H, 1-20C alkyl, aryl or CH2=C(Y)-A-Z-(wherein Y is H, lower alkyl or aryl; A is a single bond, benzyl, -OCO- or -COO-; and Z is a single bond or alkylene).
