NEW MATERIAL:An antibiotic pseudomonic acid derivative of formula I.
USE: Remedies for infectious diseases of men and animals by bacteria, having powerful antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, e.g. Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, or Streptococcus pneumonia, penicillin- or macrolide- resistant bacteria for a long duration. Useful as an intermediate for synthesis of other antibiotics.
PROCESS: An antibiotic pseudomonic acid of formula II is changed into the corresponding halohydrin compound by the well-known method, and reduced with a suitable reducing agent, e.g. zinc dust or phosphine to give the compound of formula I. The halohydrin compound is obtained by dissolving a compound of formula II in an organic solvent containing lithium bromide, and by adding hydrobromic acid to the solution.
