PURPOSE: To obtain an antifoulant effective for preventing the adhesion of marine life on the surface of ship, marine construction, etc., by intercalating nicotinamide between layers of a crystalline laminar phosphoric acid compound.
CONSTITUTION: This antifoulant is composed of a compound produced by intercalating nicotinamide between layers of at least one kind of crystalline laminar phosphoric acid compound selected from crystalline laminar phosphoric acid salt expressed by the formula I (M is zirconium, titanium or cerium; X is 0-2) and laminar dihydrogen aluminum triphosphate dihydrate expressed by the formula II, having high safety and excellent antifouling performance and exhibiting sustained release of nicotinamide. The antifouling agent exhibits excellent antifouling effect in seawater over a long period. The agent can be added to a paint containing a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer resin, etc., and used as an antifouling paint. It is also possible to slowly release the nicotinamide by using the antifoulant as it is or in the form dispersed in water or seawater.
