To obtain an antistatic agent comprising a specific sulfonic acid (salt) group-containing polymer, capable of effectively preventing electrostatic charge in a small amount, low in a fear of affection on the quality of a target article, advantageous on costs and useful for preventing electrostatic charge in paper, fibers, etc.
This antistatic agent comprises a polymer comprising (R1) repeating units of formula I [X is H, methyl; M is H, an alkali(ne earth) metal, NH4, an organic amine; the group of the formula SO3M is bound to either one of the 3, 4 and 5-positions of the benzene ring] and (R2) repeating units of formula II [(n) is 0, 1; at least one of the groups of the formulas SO3M is bound to the ortho position of the benzene ring] as essential constituting elements in an R1/R2 molar ratio of 98/2 to 80/20, and having a weight-average mol.wt. of 1000-1000000.
