PURPOSE: To obtain an effective antitumor agent having high safety, by subjecting live microbial cells of a bacterium belonging to the genus Listeria to inactivation treatment.
CONSTITUTION: An antitumor agent obtained by inactivating infectivity of live microbial cells of Listeria.monocytogenes EGD strain (ATCC 15313) or U-T strain (ATCC 19115). The inactivation is carried out by a method for treating the live microbial cells at 37W45°C temperature in a physiological saline solution of penicillin G potassium salt in 20,000W30,000 units/ml concentration for 1hr or adding chloroform in an amount almost equal to that of an aqueous physiological saline solution of the live microbial cells, vigorously stirring the solution, separating the microbial cells by centrifugation, etc., and sonicating the separated microbial cells for several min, etc. The dose of the above-mentioned antitumor agent is normally about 0.02W0.5mg/kg/day and preferably subcutaneously or intramuscularly administered once a day.
