Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for polycondensation, suitable for continuously producing a polymer of high quality, by holding a liquid to be treated in the apparatus for a given time to move it virtually in piston flow state from the inlet to outlet, and by smoothly separating volatiles, e.g. ethylene glycol, formed while the liquid is held or moved.
SOLUTION: This apparatus is equipped with (A) a heat-exchanging section, comprising heat transfer tubes 4, in the lower section of the apparatus body 1, (B) a liquid-holding section, in which spiral baffles 5 are provided to send a liquid to be treated, held in the middle section of the body 1, successively upward, (C) a space 6 for vapor/liquid separation in the upper section of the body 1, and (D) a descending tube 3 which allows the liquid to flow vertically downward in films in the central section of the body 1. This design allows polycondensation reactions by moving the liquid, held in the apparatus for a given time, virtually in piston flow state from the inlet to outlet and smoothly separating volatiles, e.g. ethylene glycol, formed while the liquid is held or moved, to continuously produce a polymer of high quality.
