To provide an apparatus and a method for detecting disconnection of an overhead line that is easily introduced at a low cost and capable of immediately detecting the disconnection thereof without being affected by electric noise and without requiring a power supply on a track.
The apparatus for detecting disconnection of an overhead line is provided at an overhead line having a trolley wire wear detection device 100, and comprises: an optical multiplexing/demultiplexing element 4a provided in an optical cable 2 connecting an optical fiber detection line 15a accommodated in a trolley wire 15 and a disconnection detector 101 for wear detection; an optical cable disconnecting mechanism 3, provided in the optical cable 2 connecting the optical multiplexing/demultiplexing element 4a and the optical fiber detection line 15a, or each of the optical fiber detection lines 15a mutually, which disconnects the optical cable 2 when overhead lines being a target of disconnection detection is disconnected; and a disconnection detector 4 for detecting disconnection of an overhead line which is connected to the optical fiber detection line 15a through the optical multiplexing/demultiplexing element 4a, uses light of a wavelength different from the disconnection detector 101 for wear detection, and detects disconnection of the optical cable 2, so as to detect disconnection of the overhead lines.
