This apparatus 66 for ink jet platemaking and proofing comprises a first element 68 capable of being controllably operated to generate an ink droplet of a first predetermined volume to print the proof on a proof acceptor, and a second element 86 capable of being controllably operated to generate a liquid droplet of a second predetermined volume for forming or completing a printing plate at each image. The apparatus also comprises a first print head 82 connected to an ink source 106 in a liquid communicating state to print the proof to be printed, and a second print head 92 connected to a liquid source 108 in a liquid communicating state to form a printing plate.
