The invention relates to an apparatus (1) for handling containers (10) and particularly plastic preforms (10), having a heating device (2), which is suitable and intended for heating the containers (10), wherein said heating device (2) has a transport device (22), which transports the containers along a specified transport path, and at least one heating element (26), which heats the containers (10), and having a handling device (6), which is downstream of the heating device (2) in the transport direction of the containers (10), wherein said handling device (6) has a second transport device (62), which transports the containers (10) along a specified transport path and at least one handling element (64), which can be inserted through an opening of the containers (10) into said containers (10) at least in sections, wherein the handling device (6) is particularly a sterilization device, which is suitable and intended for the at least partial sterilizing of an inner wall of the containers. According to the invention, the apparatus (1) has a detection device (4) arranged before the handling device (6) in the transport direction of the containers (10), which is suitable and intended for determining at least one variable characteristic for a geometrical property of the containers (10).
