To provide an apparatus for simultaneously performing the sterilization of, especially, medical wastes, their melting and volume reduction, and the elimination or reduction of the produced odors, hydrogen chloride gases, etc., and to provide a method using the same.
This apparatus is provided with a treatment chamber that holds wastes containing synthetic resins and is isolated from the atmospheric air by means of a compartment, a temperature-raising chamber that covers at least part of the treatment chamber including its bottom and heats the chamber to a specified temperature equal to or higher than the melting temperature of the synthetic resins and lower than the heat decomposition temperature of the resin, a heating chamber that is provided with a burner for heating the temperature-raising chamber, and a produced gas feeder that feeds the hydrogen chloride gas, etc., produced from the wastes in the treatment chamber into the heating chamber. A gas treatment packing layer heated by the burner is mounted on the heating chamber, and the hydrogen chloride gas, etc., are passed through the packing layer for eliminating or reducing them.
