PURPOSE: An apparatus, having inverted double catalyst pipes for converting a hydrocarbon based fuel into a gas consisting essentially of hydrogen, a fluidized bed for heating a high-temperature part and a packed bed for heating a low- temperature part, and capable of improving the heat efficiency and reliability thereof.
CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for reforming a fuel, having a fluidized bed 11 at the bottom of inverted double catalyst pipes 12 provided in the interior of a pressure vessel 10 (symbol 9 represents a refractory material) and a packed bed 21 (symbol 20 represents a space between both beds) at the top of the inverted double catalyst pipes 12. The fuel introduced from a feed pipe 22 is burned with air introduced from an inlet 23 in pipe burners 13, and the bottom of the inverted double catalyst pipes 12 is heated by the generated combustion gas through the fluidized bed 11. The top of the catalyst pipes 12 is then heated through the packed bed 21 (therefore the bottom of the catalyst tubes 12 is heated at a higher temperature than that of the top thereof), and a waste gas is discharged from the outlet 24. On the other hand, a raw material gas introduced from a feed pipe 25 and fed to the catalyst pipes 12 is lowered in the outer pipes, raised in the inner pipes, reformed in the passage, converted into a gas consisting essentially of hydrogen and taken out of a discharging pipe 26.
