Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide both an apparatus for sintering a porous glass preform capable of suppressing a difference in refractive index in the interior of a clad when sintering the porous glass preform and dehydrating and transparently vitrifying the porous glass preform and a method for sintering the porous glass preform.
SOLUTION: This apparatus 1 for sintering a porous glass preform 2 comprises a furnace core tube 12 comprising the porous glass preform 2 inserted thereinto and connected to an axial rod 18 and having a gas introduction tube 11 connected to a gas passage 3 for a dehydrating reaction and an inert gas passage 8 and further a heating source 13 capable of sintering the porous glass preform 2 which is lowering while rotating with a motor 19 connected to the axial rod 18 and arranged in the outer periphery of the furnace core tube 12. In this case, flow control valves 4 and 9 arranged in the course of the gas passage 3 for the dehydrating reaction and the inert gas passage 8 are connected to a flow rate control circuit 7 and the motor 19 is connected to a lowering speed control circuit 20. The heating source 13 is connected to a temperature control circuit 15.
