To provide an apparatus for treating excreta or the like, in which both of the amount of residual chlorine and the number of high temperature-resistant coliform bacteria are removed to reference values or less and which is used in a vessel.
The apparatus for treating excreta or the like comprises: an excreta tank 14 for treating excreta or the like from toilets arranged in the vessel; a sterilization unit 15 for irradiating the treated liquid which is treated in the excreta tank, with ultraviolet light to sterilize the treated liquid; and a discharge pipeline 41 for discharging the sterilized treated liquid overboard. The excreta tank 14 includes a pretreatment chamber 16, a catalytic oxidation chamber 17, a precipitation separation chamber 18 and a treated liquid chamber 19 along the flow direction of the treated liquid and includes: a means for introducing the treated liquid from the catalytic oxidation chamber 17 into the sterilization unit 15 and storing the treated liquid treated therein in the treated liquid chamber 19; and a means for introducing the treated liquid in the treated liquid chamber into the sterilization unit 15 and storing the treated liquid treated therein in the treated liquid chamber 19.
