To provide an applicator which is simple in structure and easy of cleaning after being operated, can control the scattering of coating by decreasing the surface area of a coating flow, and is easy of controlling the viscosity of the coating and a coating method capable of small lot production using the applicator.

In the applicator, the coating is supplied to a coating channel formed between a coating roll and a doctor, the coating dropped from the side between coating roll and the doctor is recovered by a recovery trough. A means for making the coating flow to one side of the coating channel and the recovery trough installed on the one side are provided in the applicator.
