PURPOSE: To provide an aqueous solvent-free dispersion of a fluorine-containing polymer comprising a specific polymer and a specific emulsifier for use in the fluorine chemical treatment of fibers, e.g. carpets, cushioning materials for imparting water and oil repellant properties.
CONSTITUTION: A desired aqueous dispersion comprises (A) a polymer of monomers of formulae I (wherein R is F, Cl, H or methyl; n is 5-18, preferably 8-12) and II (R is H or methyl; X is C6H5, CN, etc.), and (B) an emulsifier of formula III (wherein R is 1-4C alkyl or hydroxyethyl; R1 and R2 are each 1-4C alkyl, H or F; R3 is H or 1-4C alkyl; x is 1-3; n is 3-9, preferably 5-7) and/or of formula IV (R1 and R2 are each 1-4C alkyl or H; R3 is 8-18C, preferably 10-14C alkyl) or the emulsifier part of which is substituted with an auxiliary emulsifier, and preferably is obtained by mixing the monomer mixture with the emulsifier, adding water in such an amount that the fluorine content comes to 10-30 wt based on the total dispersion, stirring the mixture thus obtained and then adding a free radical initiator to the resulting mixture.
