Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an aqueous emulsion of a polymer of, e.g. vinyl acetate and a polymer wherein a poly(meth)acrylic ester exists mainy in the peripheral part of the dispersoid in the presence of an emulsifier and obtain a coating material with good film-forming properties and flame retardancy by using the aqueous emulsion.
SOLUTION: This aqueous emulsion is produced by using a dispersant containing at least 50% emulsifier and particularly consisting of an emulsifier and a polyvinyl alcohol at a weight ratio of (5:5) to (9:1), wherein the dispersoid consists of a vinyl ester polymer (A) and a polymer (B) comprising at least one kind of (meth)acrylic ester units and styrene monomer units at a weight ratio of polymer A to polymer B of (9:1) to (1:9) and wherein the polymer B is polymerized after the emulsion polymerization of the polymer A so that the polymer A is located in the central part of the dispersoid while the polymer B is located mainly in the peripheral part thereof. This emulsion has good film-forming properties and flame retardancy and is suitable as a binder for a coating material. It is preferable that the component A consists mainly of vinyl acetate.
