To obtain an aqueous resin composition having blocking resistance in spite of high gloss, suitably useful as an aqueous overprinting varnish and to provide a method for producing the same.
This aqueous resin composition is obtained by subjecting 95-5 wt.% of a monomer having an ethylenically unsaturated double bond to radical polymerization in 5-95 wt.% of rosin in a molten state to give a resin and dissolving or dispersing the resin in water containing a basic compound. This method for producing the aqueous resin composition comprises melting rosin, adding the monomer having an ethylenically unsaturated double bond to the rosin in a molten state, subjecting the monomer to radical polymerization to synthesize the resin and dissolving or dispersing the resin in water containing the basic compound.
