To throw scrap in a preheating device down into oblique direction or throw the scrap down into oblique direction to the vicinity of the lower part of an electrode for an arc furnace.
An arc furnace 1 is provided with a preheating device 10 at the upper part of an arc furnace 20 while the preheating device 10 is provided with a gate 50, supporting scrap charged into a tower body 14, to be opened to throw down the scrap on the gate 50. In such an arc furnace 1, an opening and closing means, stopping the gate 50 after slanting the same obliquely and throwing the scrap obliquely along the upper surface of the finger 52 of the gate 50, is provided. The scrap is thrown while being shifted in oblique direction whereby the scrap can be thrown down while being shifted from the immediately lower part of the tower body 14.
