PURPOSE: To enable oxidation consumption to be restricted at the surface of an electrode by a method wherein there is provided a device in an arc furnace having two furnaces used alternatively for melting and preheating operations so as to shield an outer circumference of a movable electrode projected out of each of lids of the furnaces against atmosphere when the movable electrode is waited above the upper part of each of the furnace lids.
CONSTITUTION: The furnace B is filled with scraps to be melted in the furnace. Discharged gas of high temperature produced in the furnace A is sent to the furnace B through a duct 8 connected to a furnace lid 5 so as to preheat scraps stored in it. The furnace B operates as a melting furnace until the preheating is started and the temperature at a movable electrode 7 shows a mean value of about 800 to 1,000°C at its surface at the starting time of preheating operation. If this electrode is installed in the atmosphere, the electrode is reacted with oxygen in the atmosphere to promote oxidization consumption there. Due to this fact, in order to restrict this phenomenon, the movable electrode 7 projected out of the furnace lid 5 is shielded against atmosphere by a shielding cylinder 10 which is mounted at the upper part of the furnace lid. The shielding cylinder 10 is divided into two segments, supported by a guide 12 with a frame 11 fixed to a jib frame 4 and opened or closed with a driving device 13. With such an arrangement as above, oxidization consumption at the surface of the electrode is restricted.
