To obtain a low-viscosity new compound excellent in liquid crystal nature, and useful as a liquid crystal material of quick responsiveness corresponding to higher-speed-and-higher-performance liquid crystal display elements.
This new compound is expressed by formula I [A is H, F, CF3, CF3O, etc.; B, C and D are each 1,4-cyclohexylene or a group of formula II (X5-X8 are each CH, CF or N); R is a (F-substituted) 1-12C alkyl, 2-12C alkenyl or 2-16C alkoxyalkyl; Z is a group of the formula, (CH2)n ((n) is 1-4), CH2O, COO, etc.; X1-X4 are each the same as X5; (j), (k) and (l) are each 0 or 1], e.g. 1-[2-(4-propylphenyl)ethyl]-4-[1-(E)-pentenyl]benzene. The compound of formula I is obtained by reaction of a compound of formula III (E is a halogen, etc.) with a boron compound of the formula, (R3)2-CH=CH-R [R3 is OH, a (branched) alkyl, etc.] in the presence of a palladium catalyst and a basic catalyst.
