To obtain a new compound having an excellent germicidal activity against blast, etc., of rice plants without damaging useful crops at all and useful as an agricultural and horticultural germicide.
This compound is represented by formula I {A is a phenyl substituted with Xn [X is a halogen; a 1-6C alkyl or the like; (n) is 1-3]; R1 is H, a 1-6C alkyl or the like; R2 is a 1-6C alkyl, a 3-6C cycloalkyl or the like; R3 is a 1-6C alkyl, a 2-6C alkenyl or the like; R4 is H, a 1-6C alkyl or the like; Q is hydroxy, a 1-6C alkoxy or the like}, e.g. 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-N-(2- hydroxy-1-isopropyl-1-methylpropyl)propionamide. The above compound is obtained by reacting an arylacetamide derivative represented by formula II with a reducing agent such as sodium borohydride in a solvent such as pentane at a reactional temperature within the range of -70 to +150°C for about 1-30 h.
