PURPOSE: To simply assay the subject substance in high sensitivity by applying a chitinase-producing bacterium to a chitin-containing solid medium, putting a water-absorbing raw material small piece containing a sample thereon, culturing the bacterium, judging existence or absence of the chitin remaining in the circumference of the small piece expressed by a size.
CONSTITUTION: A chitinase-producing bacterium (e.g. Serratia marcescens ATCC990) is applied to a solid medium containing chitin and a small piece (e.g. paper disc) of water-absorbing raw material containing a sample is put on the solid medium and the chitinase-containing bacterium is cultured at 30°C for a prescribed period and chitinase-inhibiting activity is judged by existence or absence of chitin remaining in the circumference of the small piece consisting of a water-absorbing raw material by its size. Thereby, the chitinase-inhibitor is simply assayed with high measuring sensitivity and it is useful for development, etc., of a method using chitinase-inhibitor capable of controlling growth of agricultural insert pests.
