In a safety screw closure device an axially projecting skirt portion (20) of the outer cap (12) loosely encompasses the skirt portion (34) of the inner cap (14) to allow relative rotary movement between the caps (12,14). Integrally molded with the circular domeshaped top panel (47) of the inner cap (14) there are provided a plurality of upwardly extending ratchet lugs (40) which are in engagement with a plurality of ratchet lugs (22) on the interior of the end wall (18) of the outer cap (12). Thus removal of the safety screw closure device is prevented unless the outer cap is pressed down to overcome the bias of the dome-shaped top panel (47) and thereby bring a plurality of drive lugs (26) extending downwardly from the interior of the end wall (18) into engagement with a plurality of upwardly extending drive members (52) integrally molded with the periphery of the top panel (47). A reduced thickness annular portion in the end wall (18) may facilitate slippage fo the ratchet lugs (22,40), and stop means may be provided to prevent overstressing and deformation of the top panel (47).
