To form a grove having a difference in level in a bottom surface of a flitch in order to keep the flitch more stable in rotary veneer cutting operation by preventing damage at an edge part of a veneer which is conventionally generated by a continuous planning method by a method wherein a yield of veneer plywood is raised, a discard part is minimized, a human error and intervention by a man are minimized by economizing the operation by automation, and stepwise planning of the flitch is made possible.
A method for planing the flitch having a generally flat first surface and a generally conical second surface comprises the steps of measuring a distance between the first surface and the second surface at a plurality of points placing respectively a distance in a length direction of the flitch, planning the planing operation of the flitch based on a plurality of the distance measurements and planing the flitch by following the plan. An automatic planing machine of the flitch employing the method is also provided.
