To provide an automatic transmission for achieving a compact size and improving the controllability.
A planetary gear unit PR and a clutch C3 for outputting reduced rotational speed, and a clutch C1 for connecting and disconnecting input of rotation of an input shaft 2 to a sun gear S2 are arranged on one axial side of the planetary gear unit PU, and a clutch C2 for connecting and disconnecting input of rotation of the input shaft 2 to the carrier CR2 is arranged on the axially opposite of the planetary gear unit PU. By doing so, as compared to a case wherein, for example, the clutch C1 and C2 are both arranged between a pair of planetary gear units PR and PU, the planetary gear units PR and PU can be arranged more closely together, and a transmission member 30 for transmitting the reduced rotational speed can be made shorter. Further, as compared to the case wherein, for example, the clutches C1, C2 and C 3 are arranged axially on one side, the configuration of oil passages is simplified.
