In the automatic warehouse in which a stacker crane having first and second independently elevating/lowering carriages is disposed between cargo storage shelves, and the stacker crane is controlled by a control means, the control means has an empty cargo storage part retrieval means to detect any empty cargo storage part, and cargoes are warehoused in the empty cargo storage part in the first order if the control means detects that an empty cargo storage part is present on the adjacent line shelves of the same cargo storage shelf and at the same step, in the second order if the control means detects that an empty cargo storage part is present on the adjacent line shelves and at the same step between two cargo storage shelves, in the third order if the control means detects that an empty cargo storage part is present on the adjacent line shelves of the same cargo storage shelf or between two cargo storage shelves, or in the fourth order if the control means detects two empty cargo storage parts close to a station.
