To suppress surface damage such as dark spot damage which has been a problem in the existing rail steel with a pearlitic structure, and simultaneously to improve its wear resistance.
The bainitic rail having excellent surface damage resistance and wear resistance has a composition containing, by mass, 0.15 to 0.55% C, 0.10 to 3.00% Mn and 0.10 to 3.00% Cr, and further containing one or two kinds of 0.05 to 3.00% Si and 0.01 to 3.00% Al, and has a metallic structure of the mixed one of a bainitic structure and a residual austenitic structure. In the optional cross-section in the range to a depth of at least 20 mm from the surfaces of the head corner part and head top part in the steel rail, the area ratio of the retained austenitic structure in the bainitic structure is 5 to 30%, and the hardness is 320 to 500 by Hv. Further, in the optional cross-section other than the above range, the area ratio of the retained austenitic structure in the bainitic structure is ≤5%.
