To provide a base paper for a paper yarn which hardly causes yarn break at slit processing caused by raw material entanglement, or trouble caused by the unevenness of diameters at twisting, and has reduced raw material entanglement.

The base paper for the paper yarn obtained by subjecting a paper stock containing a hemp pulp raw material to papermaking is obtained by mixing 30% or more of hemp pulp having 5% or more and 15% or less of 6% sodium hydroxide solubility in the paper stock. The base paper for the paper yarn has reduced raw material entanglement, and has excellent dry strength and wet strength.
