Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid-crystalline medium useful for electro-optical liquid- crystalline displays, or the like, which comprises a specific compound and has a desirable specific resistance, low threshold voltage and a broad range of operating temperature.

CONSTITUTION: The objective liquid-crystalline medium is prepared from a raw material which is a polar compound having a positive dielectric anisotropy and comprises a compound of formula I [wherein R is H, a (CN- or CF3- monosubstituted, halogen-substituted) 1-15C alkyl, alkenyl or the like; A1 and A2 are each trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-cyclohexenylene or the like; Z1 and Z2 are each CO-O, CH2O, CH2CH2, a single bond or the like, and one of them is (CH2)4 or CH=CH-CH2CH2; L1, L2 and L3 are each H or F; (m) is from 0 to 2; (n) is 0 or 1]. Here, the compound of formula I is obtained by converting a compound of formula II into a sodium alcoholate to obtain a compound of formula III and reacting the compound of formula III with 2,2,-difluoroethyl methanesulfonate.
