Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a new benzyl alcohol derivative capable of controlling weeds at a low dosage and useful as an active ingredient of herbicide without giving phytotoxicity to useful plants.

CONSTITUTION: A compound (e.g. 1,4,4,4-tetrachloro-2-[3-(5- trifluoromethylpyridine-2-yloxy)phenyl]butane-2-ol) expressed by formula I [R is halogen, 1-4C alkyl or haloalkyl; n is 0-4; X is halogen or group expressed by formula II (R1 is 1-4C alkyl, haloalkylphenyl, benzyl, etc.); Y is H, -CHO or 1-4C alkyl; Z is halogen, 1-4C alkyl or haloalkyl]. The above-mentioned compound is obtained by reacting a compound expressed by formula III with N-halosuccinic acid imide or halogen molecule in an aqueous solvent at 0-80°C. Examples of the aqueous solvent include a mixed solvent of water and THF, CMSO, dioxane or ether.
