PURPOSE: To obtain a novel benzylhydrazone derivative capable of exhibiting excellent control effect on blast of rice, downy mildew of cucumber, powdery mildew of barley, etc., at a low dose.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I [X is formula IV, formula V (R5 is alkyl); Y is alkoxy, alkylthio, amino, etc.; Z is halogen or (halo)alkyl; (m) is 0-4; R1 is H or (halo)alkyl; R2 is formyl, alkylcarbonyl, alkylsulfonyl, aminocarbonyl, phenylcarbonyl, phenoxycarbonyl, etc.; R3 and R4 are H, CN, alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkylsulfynyl, alkylsulfonyl, phenyl, morpholino, or R3 and R4 together form alkylene or alkenylene], e.g. methyl 2-[2-[l-acetyl-2-[1-(3-chlorophenyl)ethylidene]hydrozinomethyl]phenyl]-2- methoxypropenoate. The compound is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III in the presence of a base or silver compound in an inert solvent.
