Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL:β-Alkoxyethoxymethyl acohol of formula I (R is alkyl).
EXAMPLE: β-methoxyethoxymethyl alcohol.
USE: The compound is useful as a solvent, and its halide is useful as a raw material of various organic compounds.
PROCESS: β-Alkoxyethyl alcohol of formula II and formaldehyde are made to react at room temp. to 100°C, esp. 40W70°C, preferably using an ion exchange resin of sulfonic acid type as a catalyst. A compound of formula I is obtained from the reaction mixture. The formaldehyde is the monomer of formaldehyde, a polymer of formaldehyde, or preferably s-trioxane. The amount of the formaldehyde is preferably 0.1W0.9mol to 1mol of the alcohol used as the starting material.
