NEW MATERIAL: A compd. represented by formula I [wherein R, R1, and R2 are each H provided R and R1 may combine with each other to form a 5- to 6-membered satd. heterocycle and so may do R1 and R5; R3 is H or OH; R4 is C(R11)-XR12 (wherein R11 is H, etc; X is O, etc.; and R12 is H, alkyl, etc.); R5 is H, alkanyl, alkyl, etc.; R4 may combine with R5 to form -C(R11)-X-Z (wherein Z is =C=O bonded to ring N, etc.); R7 and R9 are each H, alkoxy, etc.; R8 is H, OH, etc., provided R8 may combine with R9 to form a dioxyalkylidene bridge; and A is O, S, etc.] and its acid additon salt.

USE: An antitumor agent having cycostatic characteristics.

PROCESS: A compd. represented by formula I is obtd. by converting a compd. represented by formula II (wherein Z1 is a group represented by formula III; and Z2 is a group represented by formula IV) into a compd. represented by formula V (wherein Z3 is a group represented by formula VI) by Bischler-Napieralski's resction, converting the acetoxy group into OH, and reducing the ring N of Z3.
