To obtain a new compound useful as an intermediate for producing a compound having insecticidal activity industrially advantageously in terms of safety, operability and economy.
This compound is shown by formula I (X is H or F; R is a 1-8C alkyl or a 1-2C alkyl which is substituted with one or more fluorine atoms)) such as 3-chloro-4-(4-ethoxyphenyl)-7-(4-fluoro-3-phenoxyphenyl)-3-methyl-2- heptenol. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting (A) a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III in a solvent in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst and an alkali metal hydroxide to give a carbonyl compound of formula IV, treating the compound with (B) a chlorine compound selected from phosphorus oxychloride, carbonyl chloride, oxalyl chloride and phosphorus pentoxide and (C) an amide compound which is N-dimethylformamide or N-methylformanilide and hydrolyzing the resulting substance.
