NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by formula I (R is 1W10C alkyl).
USE: An electro-optical display material. A nematic liquid crystal compound having low temperature dependence of threshold voltage and anisotropy of positive dielectric constant. Being blended with another nematic liquid crystal compound and usable as a display cell material of electric field effect type.
PREPARATION: A compound shown by formula II is reacted with carbon disulfide in the presence of a base (e.g. triethylamine) in a solvent such as benzene. Then the reaction product is reacted with ethyl chloroformate in a chlorine- based solvent such as chloroform to give a dithiocarbamate. Then the dithiocarbamate is decomposed with diluted hydrochloric acid and extracted to give a compound shown by formula I. The preferable example mixable is a 4-substituted benzoic acid 4'-substituted phenyl ester.
