Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL: A compound represented by formula I, wherein R1 denotes H or OH; and OH at the 7-position is in α- or β-configuration.

EXAMPLE: 3α,7β-Dihydroxy-24-oxo-5β-cholanic acid-27.

USE: A therapeutic agent for gallstone, bile desaturation, a cholesterol metabolism inhibitor, an anti-bile secretion and arresting agent, a bile secretion promoting agent, an anti-lipemia agent and a hepatocyte protective agent.

PROCESS: A compound represented by formula II (wherein R2 denotes an OH protecting group; R1' denotes H or a protected OH; and R3 denotes a carboxy protecting group) is reacted with succinic acid (derivative) in the presence of a base. The obtained compound is deprotected and decarboxylated.
