Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a previously atomized fuel which can be directly combusted without dehydration or de-emulsification by incorporating a predetermined hydrocarbon, water and surfactant composition and making the fuel possess specific characteristics.
CONSTITUTION: Hydrocarbon (e.g. vacuum residuum) with a high combustion efficiency characteristic and a viscosity of about 82,000 centipoise or more at 80 °F, water and a surfactant composition containing one or more aqueous surfactant (e.g. bioemulsifier and ethoxylated alkylphenol) is incorporated in a fuel to obtain a previously atomized fuel containing a hydrocarbon-in-water emulsion with the volume ratio of hydrocarbon to water being about 60:40 to about 90:10. Moreover, this emulsion is highly efficiently combusted in excessive air of about 2% or less and has a viscosity not larger than about 1/10 of the viscosity of the above-mentioned hydrocarbon.
