Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound useful as a liquid-crystal display material, especially a constituent material of a display element of active matrix driving at a low voltage.
CONSTITUTION: This is a compound of formula I (R is a 1-10C alkyl; X and Y are each H or F; n=0,1; when n=1, J is CH2CH2 or a single bond and Z is F, Cl, CF3, OCF3 or OCF2H; the cyclohexyl ring has a trans configuration), e.g. 2,6,3',4',5'-pentafluoro-4-[3-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)propyl]biphenyl. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a borate ester derivative of formula II with a halogenated benzene derivative of formula III (W is Br or I) in the presence of a catalyst [e.g. tetrakis(triphenylphosphine) palladium]. The compound of formula 1 is excellent in compatibility with another liquid- crystal compound or a host liquid-crystal composition and having high specific resistance and voltage retention in spite of its having extremely large permittivity anisotropy.
