To provide a booklet handling device to handle various sorts of booklets capable of accomplishing a stable page turning motion.

A page turning mechanism 200 is equipped with a page turning roller 210 and a pushup lever 222 in such a way as pinching the booklet 10. When the roller 210 is rotated in the condition contacting with the booklet, a page 11 of the booklet 10 can be turned by the friction force. In the page turning process, the position of the top of the deflected page 11 is sensed by sensors 231-233. A control unit 110 increases the friction force by raising the pushup lever 222 when a failure in the page turning motion is sensed according to the result from sensing. Sensing the position of the top by a plurality of sensors allows adjusting the friction force from time to time to lead to stabilization of the page turning motions.
