This new borate compound is expressed in formula I [n and o are each 0-50; m is 1-50; u and v are each 0 or 1, at least one of u and v is 1; R1, R2, R2a, R3, R4 are each a (substituted)phenyl and other (substituted) aromatic hydrocarbon, etc.,; X is O, S(O)p (p is 0, 1 or 2), etc., R5 is a 1-12C alkyl, a 3-12C cycloalkyl, a 2-8C alkenyl, etc., Z is a cation] and useful as a photopolymerization initiator of ethylenically unsaturated photopolymerizable compounds in paints, printing inks, adhesives, resist materials, image recording materials, etc. The compound is obtained by carrying out the reaction of the polybonate compound expressed by formula II with the compound of formula ZR5.
